A collection of keepsake items may seem overwhelming to safely store and keep track of, while still being able to enjoy them. Whether you have a collection of items or just one or two large items, a custom shadowbox display case is the perfect solution to preserve and showcase them. We are experts at creating the perfect presentation for your items – just bring them in and we can create a truly unique memory for you.
We build our custom shadowbox display cases using a tall frame moulding (high enough to keep the glazing off the object(s) being displayed) that is typically enclosed with glass or plexiglass. It’s called a shadowbox because of the shadow caused under certain light conditions by the tall frame. Typically, they contain objects or an assemblage of objects, photographs, documents, etc. They’re also called Memory boxes because people will often use them to showcase and preserve family or event memorabilia.
Conservation / Preservation Framing
We use the very best materials for your projects because we want your art and heirlooms to survive for a lifetime without change of color, damage from adhesives, or out-gassing from materials that are not acid-free. Since we frame a lot of Museum pieces we’re very familiar with the latest conservation techniques and materials.
We recommend using at least UV protective glass or acrylic (plexiglass) to ensure the contents don’t fade over time. On larger boxes, we’ll recommend Museum quality glazing because, in addition to the UV protection, it minimizes light reflection meaning exceptional clarity so that the contents of the box are more visible (because there’s less reflection) from any viewing angle.
In addition to offering pre-finished mouldings that we use to build shadowboxes, we can also create completely custom profiles and finishes from raw wood stock for that truly unique look. In this example the client wanted a shadow box to display an old violin, but they also wanted to be able to remove it easily. We created a custom moulding in our woodshop that we stained a dark maple. We also used splines (stained a darker color) to add strength to the corners and we used hinges to create an opening door (fastened with magnets) so that the instrument could be easily removed.
The shadow box interior was hand-wrapped in fabric and we created a custom mount for the instrument.
Display cases/boxes can also be enclosed or constructed to allow access to what is displayed inside with hinged doors or similar solutions.
If you’re not familiar with us or our work, we invite you to take a look around our website or, even better, come in and talk to us about your shadowbox project and we can walk you through the process and offer design tips.
